YAG laser capsulotomy

Vision gone cloudy or misty again after cataract or lens replacement surgery? A five-minute laser treatment in clinic can restore the clear sight your surgery gave you.

Why has my vision gone cloudy again?

A small number of patients develop a hazy film behind their lens implant months or years after cataract or lens replacement surgery. This is called posterior capsule opacification (PCO) — the thin capsule that holds your new lens gradually becomes frosted, and vision turns cloudy or misty again.

It’s important to know that this is not the cataract returning, and it does not mean anything went wrong with your surgery. It is common, harmless and — best of all — very simple to fix.

If you’ve had cataract or lens replacement surgery in the past and your vision has become cloudy again, you may well be suitable for this treatment. At your appointment we’ll examine your eyes and confirm whether the capsule behind your lens is becoming opacified.

How the laser restores your sight

YAG laser capsulotomy uses a precisely focused laser to create a clear opening in the cloudy capsule behind your lens implant. Nothing is removed from the eye and there are no incisions — which means no risk of infection.

The procedure is quick and painless, performed in the clinic as a day treatment, and your vision typically improves rapidly afterwards. If you have no other eye issues, the laser restores your sight to the level it reached after your original cataract or lens replacement surgery — and it is highly unlikely the capsule will ever cloud over again.

What to expect

A five-minute treatment, step by step

1

Drops to prepare

Before treatment, I administer eye drops to prepare and gently numb the eye. You'll be comfortable throughout.

2

The laser itself

You simply look at a light while I perform the laser — you'll hear a series of soft clicks. The entire process takes less than five minutes.

3

Home the same day

I may give you anti-inflammatory drops to use for a few days. Your vision rapidly improves — most patients notice the difference within 24 hours.

Frequently asked questions

Am I suitable for YAG laser capsulotomy?
You may be suitable if you’ve had cataract or lens replacement surgery in the past and your vision has become cloudy or misty again. At your appointment we’ll examine your eyes and confirm that the capsule behind your lens implant is becoming opacified before recommending treatment.
Does the laser hurt?
No. The treatment is painless — numbing drops are used beforehand, and you’ll simply see a light and hear a series of soft clicks while the laser is performed.
How long does the treatment take?
Less than five minutes. It’s performed in the clinic as a day treatment — no hospital stay, no incisions and no needles.
How quickly will my vision improve?
Rapidly. Most patients notice a clear improvement within 24 hours. If you have no other eye issues, the laser restores your vision to the level it reached after your original cataract or lens replacement surgery.
What are the risks?
Any laser procedure carries an element of risk, which I’ll discuss with you in detail at your appointment. These include temporary inflammation of the eye, floaters, and — rarely — swelling or detachment of the retina or reduced vision. Serious complications are very rare, and because nothing enters the eye there is no risk of infection.
Can the cloudiness come back after the laser?
It is highly unlikely. Once the opening has been made in the cloudy capsule, the same capsule rarely opacifies again — for the vast majority of patients this is a once-only treatment.
Are there any alternatives to YAG laser capsulotomy?
Unfortunately, no — YAG laser capsulotomy is the only effective treatment for posterior capsule opacification. The good news is that it’s quick, painless and highly successful.
What does it cost?
