Keratoconus Management

Protect Your Vision with Expert-Led, Personalised Care

If you’ve been diagnosed with keratoconus, or you’ve noticed worsening vision, increased ghosting, or difficulty with glasses, you’re not alone — and you’re not without options.

At our private clinic, we provide comprehensive, consultant-led care for keratoconus, combining cutting-edge diagnostics with a full range of medical, surgical, and supportive treatments to help preserve your vision and quality of life.

What Is Keratoconus?

Keratoconus is a progressive condition where the cornea (the clear front surface of the eye) becomes thinner and cone-shaped, distorting how light enters the eye. This can lead to:

  • Blurred or distorted vision

  • Sensitivity to light

  • Poor night vision

  • Frequent changes in glasses prescriptions

  • Difficulty with contact lens comfort

Keratoconus typically develops in the teens or early 20s, but may continue to progress for many years. Early diagnosis and management are key to long-term vision protection.

How We Help – Full-Spectrum Keratoconus Management

We tailor each treatment plan based on your age, corneal thickness, disease severity, and visual goals.

1. Monitoring & Diagnosis

  • Advanced corneal topography and tomography

  • High-resolution imaging to assess progression

  • Suitable for initial diagnosis or second opinions

2. Corneal Cross-Linking (CXL)

Stops or slows keratoconus progression
✅ Minimally invasive, outpatient procedure
✅ Strengthens the cornea by using UV light and vitamin B2 (riboflavin)
✅ Most effective when performed early

3. Specialised Contact Lenses

✅ Custom soft, rigid gas permeable (RGP), or scleral lenses
✅ Designed to mask the irregular corneal shape and improve vision
✅ Fitted by expert optometrists trained in keratoconus care

4. Corneal Ring Segments (ICRS)

✅ Minimally invasive surgical option
✅ Small implants placed in the cornea to flatten the cone and improve shape
✅ May reduce the need for contact lenses in some patients

5. Corneal Transplantation

✅ Reserved for advanced cases where scarring or thinning is severe
✅ Options include DALK (partial thickness) or full-thickness keratoplasty
✅ Consultant-performed with excellent long-term outcomes

Is keratoconus curable?

Not currently — but with modern treatments, it can be stabilised and managed very effectively, especially when caught early.

Does keratoconus always get worse?

It often progresses over time, particularly in younger people — but cross-linking can stop or significantly slow this in most cases.

Is treatment painful?

Most treatments are minimally invasive and well tolerated. Cross-linking may cause mild discomfort for a few days, which is managed with drops and bandage lenses.

Can I go private even if I’m already under NHS care?

Yes — many patients come to us for second opinions, faster intervention, or to explore additional options not readily available elsewhere.
